London larks

What an action packed musical and fun filled weekend in London I’ve just had!
Premier Inn Kensington just a 5 minute walk from Earls Court tube is a perfect economical and comfortable base. Saturday night we were in the 3rd row at the Aldwych completely enthralled by the Carole King story ‘Beautiful’. Fantastic music throughout and a pacey story well told. Cassidy Janson plays Carole to pitch perfection. A West End must see.

Sunday: a 20 minute stroll to the Royal Albert Hall stopping for breakfast en route. We spent a couple of hours rehearsing with Bob Chilcott as part of the 1200 strong Reall Big Choir singing Karl Orff’s magnificent Carmina Burana from scratch. Just being in the RAH is an amazing enough experience, but to sing with the English Festival Orchestra accompanying was a truly wonderful experience. A stroll through Hyde Park and an ice cream during the lunch break and a further rehearsal til 4pm. Found Rolo immortalised in a statue in the park!

We ran back to the park and sat in the shade of an oak watching the 2nd and 3rd sets of the men’s final at Wimbledon on an iPhone. Well done Andy Murray!

Shaking the twigs from our dresses and waking up our legs from sitting too long, we set off in search of food ; a nice chilled Sauvignon Blanc and a light supper al fresco and then back in our seats in the choir stalls for the concert.

When the orchestra struck up I had to fight  back the tears – there is something wonderful about the acoustics in that hallowed place! Peer Gynt Suite and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and after the interval it was our turn.

The performance went without hitch: the soloists were perfection. Typically the entire vocal score is now lodged in my head and the tunes burrowing away like an ear worm.

The weekend was rounded off nicely by a trip to Kensington Spa and a thoroughly relaxing morning courtesy of lastminute dot com. A wonderful weekend which passed in a whirl and would definitely recommend the Really Big Chorus experience for a memorable sing!
