Wessex Cancer Trust magical music evening

Keen to support the Wessex Cancer Trust I snapped up tickets for their Magical Music Evening at Marlborough College Memorial Hall last night. The event was very well attended and the first half featured The Chivenor Military Wives Choir (yes Gareth Malone’s original military wives choir – the first of the now fifty military wives choirs!) Although only 14 singers, we were treated to songs such as Get Here, Sing, Ave Maria, Jerusalem, Over the Rainbow and the tear inducing Wherever you Are (last year’s massive Christmas no. 1) and the new single from the album which Gareth wrote for them ‘Stronger Together’. Their new Musical Director (Gareth is First Patron) is dynamic and she told of the first time she heard the Military Wives when she took up the baton (literally) at the recording of Stronger Together at Wellington Barracks in September this year when 700 military wives came together to sing and the sound was incredible.

Second half of the evening we were enthralled by H Club (the smaller group of the fifty strong male voice Great Western Chorus) and then the full male Chorus themselves. Every songman wore a performance face – the age range is from teenage to retired; servicemen, students, lawyers, policemen – and what a phenomenal sound and visual spectacle. I am sure Linda Cocoran, musical director has her hands full with this lot but I bet they have a lot of fun – it certainly looks as though they are enjoying themselves immensely! Favourites included The Rhythym of Life, One Voice, Moondance and an impromptu sing in The Royal Oak pub after the concert. A great deal of money was raised for Wessex Cancer Trust and a fabulous musical evening was enjoyed by all.
