Bluebell Railway revisited

There is something truly nostalgic and wonderful about a steam train journey. From the whoo whoo of the whistle to the puffs of white smoke as the engine builds up steam…The Bluebell Railway is one of the best private railways in the world. Started in the 60’s by a few anoraks determined to preserve an old private agricultural railway line, the track has extended 9 miles from Sheffield Park in East Sussex to Kingscote via Horsted Keynes and in March 2013 a further two miles of track will open to take the line to East Grinstead – a major achievement! I remember family birthday picnics at the Bluebell railway in the late 60’s…it is still run by a team of volunteers but now with 32 preserved steam engines, the Bluebell has featured in many film and television series…notably The Railway Children and Horsted Keynes’ marvellously preserved station is seen most recently in the current series of Downton Abbey. Museum and engine sheds add to the visit….and a pub and authentic station tea room (alas Rolo was welcomed on the train but not in the refreshment facilities!)

We chanced upon the 11am Autumn Tints run, pulled by a steam engine, seated in a small glass observation carriage dating from 1913, abd pulled by an engine which travelled clickety clack over many tracks all over the country before being lovingly rescued and restored by the Bluebell team. A 90 minute round trip to Kingscote is well worth the view of glorious autumn colour lining the banks of the railway cutting. There are signalmen, stokers and not-so-fat controllers – all appropriately dressed and how I would love to blow that whistle and wave the green flag! Special Autumn journeys take place through early November, and Santa specials and Murder Mystery Dinners as well as fine dining jollys on the Golden Arrow Pullman keep the trains on the tracks all year round…The Bluebell Railway is an absolute national gem, and needless to say Rolo loved his railway adventure as you can see from the pictures!
