Marlborough Community Orchard

What a wonderful way to spend a dry October Sunday morning – being involved in the planting of a community orchard in Marlborough as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The aim is for Marlborough to become a town within an orchard, and several organisations including Marlborough Community Choir have sponsored fruit trees which we this morning planted in a diamond shape on the Common. Our lovely lady mayoress was there, complete with bagpipes and vicar Andrew Studdart-Kennedy to bless the trees. Rolo assisted with the watering. Thankfully the council had already dug the holes for us. We had a demonstration of how to plant; what depth, addition of bonemeal, handling the sapling and adding a watering tube, rabbit proof guard and inside out bicycle tyre to stop the council strimmers damaging the roots and to hold the shredded bark in. A stake of course, to tether the sapling to and give it some protection in early months from the gusty winds on the common. The labour of care of the trees and the harvesting of the fruit will be up to the community to share. Phase 2 of the orchard planting will be in November, and the Tree Council are donating a Mulberry Tree in January; a tree which fits the orchard theme and has royal connections. Children of Marlborough will indeed be able to dance around the mulberry bush!
