You can’t beat a glorious September weekend in the market town of Ludlow, especially when the Food Festival is on. Armed with man and dog we bought tickets for the Ale Trail (£6.50) and the Sausage Trail (£3.50) and off we went, trailing around 14 pubs tasting such delights as Cleric’s Cure,Stairway, Old Prickly, Butty Bach and Boiling Well. My particular favourite is Ludlow Gold but I have to admit Hop Twister went down very well indeed. The Ale Trail is a great crowd pleaser – for your £6.50 you receive a handsome half pint engraved mug on a lanyard, and a card with 14 boxes for scores, and a map of Ludlow. There are even shuttle buses back to town from the 3 furthest watering holes. Warmest welcome came from the Ludlow Brewery itself, and The Cliffe Hotel. In some of the pubs, ale trailers were treated like the great unwashed/unwanted….’queue here, have your card ready for stamping’ etc etc…they are silly because the welcome determines whether we would return to that particular establishment to enjoy a pint or not.

Soaking up the ale, we sampled 5 Ludlow sausages and voted marks out of ten. My particular favourite was the Gloucester Old Spot sausage from the Ludlow Food Centre. Rolo managed to sample rather a few more sausages by hanging round the food stalls, doing his meerkat impression, to which he has now perfected Puss (from Shrek) eyes…needless to say we are BOTH now on a strict diet!

On the way south we stopped at Berrington Hall NT, one of Capability Brown’s last landscaped parklands and Rolo enjoyed a lovely walk around the lake. Dogs are actually welcomed here. We didn’t have a chance to visit the house on this occaison but will return. The tearoom is pretty good and dogs allowed in the courtyard.
