Giffords Circus – what a treat!

Giffords Circus’ distinctive burgundy wagons pitching up on Marlborough Common always creates a buzz of candyfloss flavoured and barrel organ accompanied excitement in the town, but also sadly signifies the end of Summer. We have been enjoying Giffords Circus for 10 years and even though the children are pretty much grown up, they will always love, and want to experience the delights Nell Gifford brings to the Big Top every year, even if it’s no longer a ‘back to school’ treat in this house.

We absolutely love Tweedy. I defy anyone not to crack up at his limitless facial expressions, and his dexterity in climbing up two straight ladders in the middle of the tented floor with nothing to lean them on is sheer genius. This is a visually hilarious treat! This year Tweedy has learnt to vault on Gifford’s splendid horses, no doubt under the watchful eye of Nell…he also has his own little tiny pony Tom complete with matching red quiff. Other perennial favourites are Bibi and Bichu the astonishing Ethiopian juggling brothers – gorgeous to look at with their gleaming smiles and air of always enjoying themselves tremendously. It seems Bibi too, has learnt to vault! A welcome return of Brian the Goose (I wonder if he has his own dressing room?) and the bear who always bumbles into the curtains. Priceless Giffords. The band, saucily clad in suspenders and bustiers (the females I hasten to add!) really add to the live and spontaneous enjoyment factor – superb music with a hint of burlesque! New this year and great foil for Tweedy is David Hibling as the Policeman (boo hiss!) – the Saturday Book Theme is easy to follow and Giffords takes on the air of a Summer pantomime orchestrated by Tweedy. A performing rescued dog, synchronised doves, Ukranian gymnasts, French wire walker and dancing hand standers make up this wonderful family entertainment (and believe me you don’t need children to enjoy it!). This year I really think they surpassed themselves. Fabulous to be able to dance with the cast after the show, and I’ve always wanted to dine with the cast at Circus Sauce (travelling restaurant) after the performance…perhaps next year!

My teens ban me from dancing in the ring! Always wanted to do Sauce too. We should go together next year.
