Ladies Day at Cheltenham Races

I love watching horse racing…Dubai, Ascot, Newbury; but I’ve never seen the neddies over jumps, nor have I ever been to Cheltenham. A very good family friend invited me to Ladies Day yesterday; part of the Cheltenham Festival. All went according to plan….train from Swindon; shuttle bus from station to racecourse…all very efficient, and into the Club Enclosure. It was a fabulous day’s racing and I love a little flutter (always have a low budget and stick to it – there’s no such thing as a dead cert, a poor bookie or a bookie on a bike!) and although glancing at Racing Post I have no idea about studying form but enjoy looking at their lovely horsey faces in the parade ring – I can spot the ones who are looking for sugarlumps, and the ones who are keen to get out on the track! One horse I confess I picked for it’s name – ‘Finnians Rainbow’ because I remember it as a happy film from my childhood (‘dashing along in the gnome mobile’ – I have a feeling Petula Clarke was in it!). It was first past the post! What a fabulous setting the racecourse is in, nestling in the green hills. I need to return and explore the Regency town some time. All in all I didn’t do too badly – 2 winners out of 7 races and only £4 down at the end of the day – and what a marvellous day out it was! Many girls forgot to wear skirts in seemed and some were wearing extremely high stilettos – didn’t see them on the grass at the rails haha! There will be some bunions in the making after the Gold Cup tomorrow methinks, says she in her sensible shoes with a slight Cuban heel lol. Nice to put a frock on – didn’t bother with a ‘wedding hat’ though. Thoroughly enjoyed the adventure…bus and train system just as efficient for clearing the crowds after the last race – well done to the transport management team!

As you drive into Cheltenham during Gold Cup week you can be sure that the verges are lined with daffodils. Ah – homesick.
