you can hear the cogs whirring!

A lively day was spent at Walwayne Court Primary School as part of their Alien themed enrichment week. And want an enriching experience it was indeed! Due to the exuberance and imagination of the staff and some useful props, the children discovered the wreckage of an alien spacecraft which appeared to have crashed on their playing field; burned a hole in the grass; skidded several metres and then broke up on impact…there was even some goo leaking out! By the time the children arrived on Monday morning, the MoD had arrived in a van, the area had been cordoned off; lights were flashing and men in white coats were taking samples and investigating the site. What a lucky school!

I showed the children a BBC clip from the BBC learning zone website, showing The Iron Man (no not Robert Downey Junior!) falling off a cliff, as read by its author, Ted Hughes. Great talking point for wow vocabulary, repetition and description. Each child made an alien name as an anagram of their own first name. Then the children were each given a foil wrapped sweet (no nuts!) and they had to become alien investigators and write 5 sentences about the ‘object’ without using the word chocolate, using their 5 senses, the last of course being taste…yummy yummy! Great way to get even the most reluctant of writers to put pen to paper. Then we grew our own story in a group, based on what we had seen on the field. Each child thought about what had gone before and added a sentence. It appears that the caretaker is an alien and Mrs Kenyon the head, saves the day. We also wrote ‘list poems’ which we might use to describe ourselves to an alien….My names is…..I like……I dislike…All of this and much much more, makes me what I am….I am….We finished up by drawing some great alien pictures….and I even sold a few dragon books!
