To someone who hasn’t seen Autumn colours for 20 years, this time of year has taken my breath away by nature’s paintbox. You can pay 9 pounds to visit exquisitely planted Westonbirt Arboretum (see earlier blog) or stroll for free in Savernake Forest…or if you’re a National Trust member, visit wonderful park land such as Dyrham Park (Wiltshire) or Sheffield Park Garden (East Sussex).

Even the treeline view from my window, looking out over the Marlborough Downs – so green in Summer and stark in Winter – is a visual feast. No rain to speak of just yet so not much in the way of funghi in the woods..not that I am wishing it to rain too much…although the Kennet is looking pretty dry under the footbridge on the edge of Marlborough College on the way to St Georges church Preshute.

I used to ride in Dyrham Park, on a Friday evening in the Summer, the sun going down, the hot air balloons drifting over from Bristol, deer minding their own business, buzzards over head. Pub on the way back for half a real ale (horses like beer too). The Savernake Forest also holds special memories for me of a lovely day out with my favourite Uncle and Aunt.
