Bali Bliss

Very pleasant 90 minute flight to Denpasar with Garuda and a decent beef and noodle meal followed by strange but tasty green fruit jelly. The taxi queue was a mile long so I walked through the airport carpark and hailed a cab. Probably paid too much ($30) for the 80 min taxi ride to Kedawatan (near Ubud) but wanted to get here! Beautiful scenic drive….roads lined with shops selling Balinese statuary…Buddahs jostling with Ganeshes…and punctated by paddi fields. Alongside rode a moped weighed down by 6 rocking horses with menacing faces…wish I had the camera to hand! The statues wear sarongs to hide their lower half…If I described Zambia earlier this year as paradise found in Africa , this is surely the Asian version of Nirvana.

I chose the Puri Bunga resort (which is scenic and sprawling,  situated just outside Ubud) from Trip Advisor….and boy have a picked a good’un! I have miraculously been upgraded to a deluxe suite…there are only 10 rooms….and my accommodation is bigger than my house in England. Spectacular views of the Ayung River and palm treed hillside opposite…that lovely aroma of woodsmoke (hope it keeps the mosquitos away!) and the shrieks of happy white water rafters….no I’m not in the least bit tempted!

There is a shuttle bus twice a day to Ubud (where the writers festival is held and I am giving a workshop there this week) otherwise its a $5 taxi fare. For now, I’m going to go and lie by the pool with the book I’m engrossed in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’….I have the trilogy with me and am loving it.
