Giffords Circus…a Summer tradition

Visiting Giffords Circus on Marlborough Common has been an Evans family end of Summer tradition since it first pitched up in 2000. The children are all grown up now but still we wouldn’t miss it for the world. Giffords is the brainchild of Nell and Totti Gifford, and every year they assemble a  wonderfully talented band of musicians, actors, acrobats, and jugglers from around the world and  tour the South West of England all summer, in their maroon caravans and big top, delighting audiences young and old. It really doesn’t matter whether its a glorious day or the rain is pouring down – inside the Big Top you can’t help joining in the magic; looking around faces are glowing and everyone, performers and audience, is having fun. There is always a theme and this year, it’s War and Peace, and the acts slotted into the story. It was fabulous to see the return of Tweedy (master of slapstick) – he always has the audience in the palm of hand…and Bibi and Bichu, Ethiopian juggling brothers are particular favourites of mine with their sparkling smiles and cheeky banter. I love the horses too, beautiful dressage in a tiny sawdust ring and immaculately turned out. Very much looking forward to Giffords next production – they work very hard all winter to prepare and rehearse. The result is unique old fashioned feel good family entertainment. http://www.giffordscircus.com/home.php

Ah – you know I’m a fellow Giffords fan and haven’t missed a show since I saw them in a pub car park in a much smaller tent for their first season. The shows, costumes and music have got better and better but they’ve never lost sight of the early days and the continuity of great family entertainment in a relaxed way, remains.
