Wet days and National Trust tearooms

What to do to fill a wet lunchtime, driving between Blackburn (Lancashire) and Haxey (Lincolnshire)…my next destination? Open the NT handbook and find somewhere for a decent lunch and a bit of culture….aha Nostell Priory. Undergoing renovations at the moment to the stable block (tea room) but still functional. The house itself is an interesting collection of ‘stuff’…lots of Chippendale furniture and Adam ceilings and an amazing library with false book doors… home of the Winn family for generations. The interior makes the Burj al Arab look tasteful….so many ornate ceilings and four poster beds and clashing with wallpapers, tapestries, and a rare Harris grandfather clock with a soothing tick. The baths are deep but in need of Vim – not very inviting! Paintings adorn the walls and the upper floor of the house complete with balcony is an increasingly popular wedding venue.

Its a ten minute stroll from the car park to the house. I was marooned in the NT shop when the heavens opened. Unbelievably heavy rain and I was lured by NT chutneys, sweets, tea towels and biscuits whilst waiting for the covered buggy back to the car park.

Staying at Haxey that evening I visited Epworth and was amazed by the gem of the Mechanics Institute library…very old fashioned, up some rickety wooden stairs and the books were ancient and very interesting indeed.
