two go to Dorset….and get sunburnt!

One of my best friends and I always look forward to our annual trip to Bridport in Dorset which we book months in advance…we stay in the Bull Hotel. Expensive but a special treat. The food is excellent and the restaurant has won awards. (I’ve eaten so much fish and seafood this weekend I think I must have the aura of a Mermaid…Dorset kippers for breakfast, seafood pie, seafood platter with coriander rice, even a tuna sandwich at a National Trust tea room on the way home!). This was our 4th visit, having done the ‘big walk’ in Autumn, Spring and twice now in Summer we have ALWAYS been blessed with good weather and this weekend was no exception.

We arrive on Friday and take possession of the Flamingo Room (spacious twin with the comfiest beds I’ve EVER slept in). Outside in the courtyard, a nice bottle of chilled Sauvignon Blanc and a dish of olives with foccaccia and olive oil for dipping whilst we study the menus. Dinner as above, and a naughty ‘afters’ of rice pudding with rhubarb compote, and chocolate fondant with cherry ice cream. Bad girls! Saturday morning we fully indulge in a fortifying breakfast (Dorset cereals with fruit and yoghurt, kippers for me, full English etc all on offer) and then we pop across the road to Leakers amazing Bakers for picnic provisions. Feta and spinach on dough base to die for, and banana, walnut and chocolate bread brought from home. Oh and 2 very healthy apples for nutritional balance (haha!) and plenty of water. Sparingly applied the suncream and omitted to put it in the rucksack. Big mistake. And off we go. Bridport high street to West Bay is a mile or so across a caravan park and along a river…then we start the ascent. The South West Coast Path is a challenge and a killer. We dare ourselves every year to walk from Bridport to Golden Cap…about 14 miles round trip…but its up the cliffs and down the valleys, via Eype and Seatown. The cliffs afford stunning views of the coast….this is England (and indeed Dorset) at its best. This time, we chose possibly the hottest day of the year for our pilgrimage and only made it as far as Seatown, spending a few hours lying on the warm pebbles listening to the waves lapping the shingle shore. And then the very long up and down walk back…we were out for 8 hours and burned to a crisp. Today I resemble a panda. You would think after 20 years of desert living I would know better! I have this ridiculous compulsion to pick up interesting pebbles on this walk and my rucksack weighs heavily on my sunburned shoulders….my hearth is covered in harvested pebbles and rocks.

This morning we deviated from our usual Lyme Regis or Corfe Castle visit and drove to Chesil Beach (beautiful National Trust nature reserve) and walked along the shingle coast path and then descended to the beach. Imagine my surprise to find two naked anglers – perhaps they mis-read  ‘nature’ for ‘naturist’! – and I was most concerned and watched through my fingers as they were casting into the sea!

A glorious relaxing weekend revelling in floomfy beds and Neal’s Yard toiletries and gourmet food, interspersed with healthy spells of walking uphill and down, and much needed girly catching up time. Weekends don’t come much better than this.

If I wasn’t already here, this piece and pics would make me book my plane ticket.
